Two granite stones set the same year, ten miles apart, will not look the same in a decade.
Families sometimes ask why we quote a different cleaning schedule for a plot in Hull than for one in Hanover. The answer is that the South Shore packs several genuinely different environments into a short drive, and stone responds to each of them differently.
Granite looks solid, but it is porous. Salt carried inland on the air settles on the surface and works into those pores with rain and fog. When the stone dries, the salt crystallizes and expands. Repeat that cycle through a few hundred coastal weather swings and the result is a slow roughening of the surface — polished granite loses its sheen, and natural finishes erode.
The roughening matters beyond appearance. A rougher surface holds more moisture and gives lichen and algae more to grip. Salt exposure does not just dull a stone directly; it makes the stone a better host for the biological growth that dulls it further.
This is why the cemeteries closest to the water — Hull Village, Cohasset Central overlooking Little Harbor, the Scituate burying grounds — see stones green up noticeably faster than plots a few miles inland.
Salt is not the only accelerant. A heavily shaded, wooded plot holds moisture long after an open plot has dried, and persistent moisture is what algae and lichen need most. Norwell's cemeteries are quiet and tree-covered, and the most common condition we treat there is green biological growth on stones that have never been anywhere near salt spray.
North-facing markers are a particular case. They get the least direct sun, dry the slowest, and darken first — often noticeably faster than a stone twenty feet away that happens to face south.

These are starting points, not verdicts. The condition of the specific stone tells us more than its location does, which is why we look before quoting rather than applying a schedule from a chart.
There is a temptation, when a stone has gone a long time without care, to want it dealt with aggressively in one go. That instinct is the source of most permanent headstone damage we see. Pressure washing erodes the surface and takes carved lettering with it. Wire brushes scratch polished granite and leave metal behind that rusts into the stone. Bleach and vinegar deposit salts that keep working long after the rinse.
A stone-safe biological solution applied on a regular schedule does more good over a decade than any single intensive cleaning, and it does not cost the stone anything. This is the whole argument for regular light maintenance over one-time rescue work — particularly in the coastal and shaded conditions where growth returns fastest.
