The damage from a household cleaner rarely shows the season you do it. It shows up years later, and it does not come back out.
Every few months we get a call that starts the same way: someone cleaned a family stone themselves, it looked better for a season, and now it looks worse than before they started. Almost always the culprit is bleach, a wire brush, or both.

The instinct behind bleaching a headstone is reasonable: the stone is green, bleach kills green things, the green goes away. What that instinct misses is that a headstone is not a bathroom tile. Granite, marble, and slate all have open pore structure, and liquid applied to the surface does not stay on the surface — it wicks inward.
That is fine when the liquid is water. It is not fine when the liquid leaves something behind.
Household bleach is a salt solution. When it soaks into the stone and the water evaporates, the salts stay in the pores. They do not rinse out — a garden hose wets the surface, it does not flush the interior.
From there the damage is mechanical rather than chemical. Salts held inside stone dissolve when the stone takes on moisture and recrystallize when it dries. Crystals occupy more volume than the dissolved salt did, so each wetting and drying cycle exerts pressure outward from inside the pores. On the South Shore, with fog, rain, and a full freeze-thaw winter, that cycle runs constantly.
The visible result arrives slowly: a chalky or powdery surface, flaking, softened detail in carved lettering, and in marble a gradual sugaring of the surface texture. It typically shows up seasons or years after the cleaning that caused it, which is exactly why the connection is so often missed.
This is not a fringe position. The National Park Service, which maintains government-issued headstones across the national cemetery system, states plainly in its cleaning guidance that household bleach and other oxidizing cleaners "may chemically react with the stone surface and leave soluble salts in the pores of the stone which will lead to decay."
Vinegar gets recommended as the gentle, natural alternative to bleach. On marble and limestone it is worse. Both are calcium carbonate, and acid dissolves calcium carbonate — that is the whole reaction. Applying vinegar to a marble headstone etches the surface and eats into the very lettering you are trying to make legible.
Dish soap is the mildest of the common DIY choices and the one we object to least, but it carries its own problem: soap residue left in the pores holds moisture and gives algae and lichen a better foothold than they had before. A stone washed with dish soap and not thoroughly rinsed often greens up faster than an untouched one.
The abrasive approaches damage stone in a more immediate way, and the damage is not recoverable.
What these methods share is that they all produce a dramatic result immediately. That is precisely what makes them tempting, and it is the reason we treat a same-day total transformation as a warning sign rather than a selling point.
D/2 Biological Solution is a pH-neutral, biodegradable biocidal cleaner developed for stone conservation. The National Park Service names it directly in its best-practice recommendations for cleaning government-issued headstones, listing D/2 Biological Solution among its recommended biocidal cleaners.
The mechanism is different in kind from bleach. Rather than stripping the growth off chemically, D/2 kills the biological organisms — the algae, lichen, and moss — and then normal weather carries the dead material away over the following weeks. Nothing is scrubbed off, nothing is blasted off, and no salts are deposited into the stone.
The trade-off is patience. A stone keeps lightening for a month or more after an application, and a serious case takes multiple visits. It is genuinely slower than bleach. It is also the difference between a stone that looks well-kept in fifty years and one that does not.
We want to be careful not to overstate this, because most people cleaning a family stone are doing something good and doing it with care. The realistic risks, in rough order of how often we see them:
None of this is reversible. Stone conservation has no undo — a cleaning can restore appearance, but nothing puts back material that has been removed or reverses erosion that has been accelerated. That asymmetry is the entire argument for a slow method.
Plenty of families would rather do this themselves, and that is a fine thing to want. The short version: water and a soft natural-bristle or nylon brush, worked gently, will do real good and cannot do harm. D/2 is available to buy directly and is safe for a careful non-professional to use if you follow the label. What we would ask you to avoid is everything above — bleach, vinegar, any household cleaner, wire brushes, and pressure washing.
If the stone is pre-1900, thin slate, already flaking, or leaning, that is the point to stop and ask someone before touching it. Older markers on the South Shore are frequently more fragile than they look.
